Exploring the World through Work: My Secondment Experience in Japan

I am excited to share my exciting journey of going on secondment to Japan as a graduate at Ashurst as well as some tips and tricks for your future applications.

Why I Applied for the Opportunity

The prospect of working in a foreign country has always captivated me. When Ashurst presented me with the opportunity to go on secondment to the Tokyo office, I applied without hesitation. My primary reasons for applying for an international secondment were cultural immersion, professional growth and networking. So far, despite only being in Japan for just over two months, my experience has ticked off all three. Japan boasts such a rich and unique culture that I have been lucky to experience and enjoy firsthand. While in Japan, I have been able to engage with foreign clients and adjust to a new business environment which has enhanced my legal skills and increased my ability to adapt to change. I have networked both professionally and personally establishing invaluable international connections.

Working in Japan vs. Australia

Working in Japan presents a distinct set of experiences compared to Australia, notably familiarising yourself with different cultural customs and overcoming language barriers. Business in Japan is conducted in a much more formal manner, and I had to learn the correct way to engage with clients in meetings, properly exchange business cards in accordance with custom and familiarise myself with cultural expectations. It is very rewarding to immerse yourself in a new business setting but different cultural expectations in the work environment are something to familiarise yourself with before you dive right in!

Travel and Social Opportunities

One of the most rewarding aspects of my secondment to Ashurst Tokyo has been the travel and social experiences. I have made friends with many graduates on secondment to Tokyo from different firms from London, frequently spending my evenings and weekends with them exploring everything Japan has to offer. So far I have travelled to amazing destinations, including Hiroshima, Hakone, Kamakura and Mt Fuji, and I am lucky enough to be going to away to ski over New Years. Japan is a beautiful country offering so much to see, with every weekend presenting a new opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture whether it be at shrines, markets, coastal towns or in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

If you aspire to similar opportunities, here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Get Involved: Participate in extracurricular activities, particularly those that offer leadership roles or international exposure.
2. Network Early: Build connections with teachers, mentors, and professionals in your field of interest.
3. Stay Curious: Read about different cultures and global business practices. This will prepare you for working in diverse environments.

Conclusion

Going on secondment with Ashurst has been an enriching experience, both professionally and personally. It has broadened my horizons, enhanced my legal skills, and allowed me to make international friends.
