Ashurst has strengthened its international arbitration team with the appointment of Matthew Saunders as a partner in the dispute resolution practice, based in London.
Matthew joins from DLA Piper, where he was global head of its international arbitration group and was one of the partners responsible for founding the practice. He specialises in energy, mining and telecoms cases and has particular experience in bilateral investment treaty cases both for and against sovereign states. Matthew is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
Commenting on the appointment, Simon Bromwich, global head of dispute resolution, said:
"Matthew is a recognised leader in his field and has a tremendous breadth and depth of specialist experience handling arbitrations. We have ambitious plans to grow our international arbitration practice in priority sectors and regions for the firm and Matthew's appointment is a further step in pursuit of that strategy. We are continuing to see a high number of disputes arising from, for example, major infrastructure projects and Matthew's knowledge and expertise will help us to capitalise further on that."
Matthew Saunders commented:
"This is a really exciting time to be joining Ashurst's international arbitration team. Given the strength of the firm's existing capability, both in international arbitration and in key sectors for arbitration such as energy and mining, there is an ideal platform on which I look forward to helping strengthen Ashurst's client offering."
